In a move to broaden the company's noninvasive ventilation offerings, Respironics, Inc. (Murrysville, PA, USA) has acquired Caradyne Limited (West Galway, Ireland) for U.S.$5.5 million.

Caradyne, which has revenues of $3.5 million annually, specializes in the design and manufacture of respiratory therapy equipment and has special expertise in positive pressure ventilation. The company's Whisperflow product line provides a comprehensive noninvasive ventilation treatment for a wide range of adult and pediatric respiratory conditions. The line is designed to reduce the patient's work of breathing, improve oxygen uptake, and to be highly portable and easy to use. Respironics actually acquired 100% of the stock of Ireland-based Western Biomedical Technologies (WBT), which owned all the outstanding stock of Caradyne.

"Caradyne's Whisper Flow technology for example has application in noninvasive ventilation in the pre-hospital and emergency room settings. This broadens our noninvasive ventilation offering from hospital and homecare to paramedic crews where critical intubation decisions are often made,” noted John Miclot, president and CEO of Respironics. The company develops, manufactures, and distributes products and programs for the global sleep and respiratory markets, and is focused on providing innovative noninvasive devices for use in hospitals and pre-hospital applications.
