Alliance to Improve Radiation Therapy

Calypso Medical (Seattle, WA, USA) has announced a strategic collaboration with Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands) that will enable the development of products with the potential to deliver both adaptive and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT). The collaboration was announced at the annual meeting of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ASTRO) in Atlanta (GA, USA) in October 2004.

Philips expects to provide enhancements to its treatment planning systems with target localization from the Calypso 4D Localization system as a result of this collaboration. The Localization system was designed to provide an objective and continuous method to setup treatment and monitor the patient during radiation delivery without adding ionizing radiation.

"Working together with the leaders in the field of radiation therapy, we can provide the ‘missing link' to advance radiation treatment options,” said Eric R. Meier, Calypso Medical's president and CEO. "Today's highly conformal radiation therapy treatment options rely on knowing the exact location of the target moment to moment. Establishing a relationship with Philips marks a commitment to advance planning and delivery techniques such as adaptive radiation therapy.”

Using its proprietary AC electromagnetic technology, the Calypso system has excellent capability to pinpoint the target continuously throughout the treatment process, without adding ionizing radiation. The open-system architecture design enables the integration of localization and tracking information through the care pathway from simulation through treatment delivery.

"Calypso Medical's technology, in conjunction with the Pinnacle3 and AcQSim treatment planning and simulation solutions from Philips, has the potential to deliver on the promise of adaptive and image-guided radiation therapy. The end result is expected to be among the most precise treatments available to patients,” remarked Keith Tipton, general manager, radiation oncology, Philips Medical Systems.
