Medical devices for the treatment of cerebral and peripheral vascular diseases are now being marketed in China by MicroVention, Inc. (Aliso Viejo, CA, USA). The devices have been cleared by the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).Posted on 09 Aug 2005
An embolization system called HydroCoil combines platinum microcoil technology with a highly expandable microporous hydrogel called Intelligel, a "smart material” that expands to a predetermined diameter after several minutes. The superior volume filling of the system provides better occlusion for vascular lesions, compared to bare platinum coils. Doctors can control delivery of the device better and reposition it, if necessary.
A line of platinum coils for the treatment of cerebral aneurysms and other vascular lesions is included in the MicroPlex system. This system incorporates a wide range of three-dimensional (3D) framing coils in multiple sizes, with configurations of helical filling coils and a soft-finishing coil for placement in the remaining spaces. The coils are designed to work both independently and in conjunction with the HydroCoil system to occlude vascular lesions efficiently and effectively. They offer a durable endovascular therapeutic alternative to neurosurgical clipping for the treatment of cerebral aneurysms as well as for the embolization of vascular lesions in the periphery.
"With the capability to market our family of products through a top distribution partner in China, we are confident that we will rapidly expand our presence in this key international market,” said Mike Kleine, president and CEO of MicroVention. The medical devices will be sold through MicroVention's Chinese distributor, Beijing Aidefan Medical Device Ltd. (Beijing, China).
