As part of the upgrading of the country's network of nearly 1,000 hospitals and clinics, the Ministry of Health in China (Bejing) has ordered more than 550 hematology instruments from Abbott Laboratories (Abbott Park, IL, USA), the largest order for these instruments in Abbott's history.

The instruments are to be installed in hospitals located in 23 provinces throughout China, including those in rural areas. The Cell-Dyn hematology instruments are designed to be efficient and provide fast access to patient results. They range from larger analyzers that process a high number of patient samples to smaller instruments designed for medium and small-volume facilities. In addition to providing red- and white-blood-cell counts, some instruments have features to aid in the evaluation of more complex disease states or infections, including cancer, HIV, and a variety of anemias.

As part of a strategic investment plan implemented three years ago, Abbott Diagnostics has continued to expand its business in this region of the world. The company offers a wide range of innovative tests as well as instrument systems and software solutions to aid workflow and productivity in laboratories. Recently, Abbott introduced the Architect ci8200, an integrated immunoassay and clinical chemistry system.

"We are pleased that the Ministry of Health selected Abbott's Cell-Dyn 1800 for use throughout its hospital network,” noted Sherri Hopson, divisional vice president, commercial operations, Asia Pacific, Abbott Diagnostics. "This agreement is an important step towards further establishing and growing our diagnostic business in China.”
