Boston Scientific (Natick, MA, USA) has acquired the rights to rotational thrombectomy technology from Rex Medical, L.P. (Radnor, PA, USA). Rex Medical specializes in the development of less-invasive medical devices primarily for vascular applications.

Based on the acquired technology, Boston Scientific plans to develop a rotational thrombectomy device that can prevent or delay additional surgery related to the obstruction of dialysis grafts. Thrombectomy is a procedure used to remove blood clots from native and prosthetic blood vessels. The technology acquired facilitates the removal of clots from the lumen of a hemodialysis graft via a percutaneous procedure.

Boston Scientific is a worldwide developer and marketer of medical devices used in a broad range of interventional medical specialties. "The technology acquired from Rex will enable us to expand our product offerings in the thrombectomy area, allowing a less-invasive treatment for hemodialysis patients experiencing thrombus formation in their prosthetic graft,” said Steve Moreci, senior vice president and group president for endosurgery. In addition, the company envisions using this technology as a platform on which to develop future thrombectomy products.
