Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. (Tustin, CA, USA), a leading provider of diagnostic imaging technology, and CMS, Inc. (St. Louis, MO, USA), a worldwide market leader in radiation treatment planning and workflow management systems, have announced a distribution agreement that provides integrated computed tomography (CT) imaging and virtual simulation systems to Toshiba's customers.

The agreement combines the powerful treatment planning capabilities of Toshiba's Aquilion LB CT scanner designed to provide excellent patient positioning, image quality, and clinical performance with novel features and functionality of CMS's virtual simulation software systems and planning workflow management tools.

Under the terms of the agreement, Toshiba will offer its customers CMS's FocalSim CT simulation workstation--a flexible PC-based application that includes multi-modality image fusion, patient contouring, CT simulation, and plan-review modules, combined with CMS Direct Access, a unique distributed workflow management tool that supports robust remote access to CMS planning applications from any location inside or outside the clinic.

"We believe our agreement with CMS will play an integral role in the delivery of a high performance system for cancer patient treatment,” said Doug Ryan, director of the CT Business Unit, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. "While our Aquilion LB solves the primary challenge of patient positioning with the industry's largest bore opening of 90 cm and the largest scanning field of view of 70 cm, the addition of FocalSim workstations will dramatically expand clinical capabilities--enhancing the delivery of treatment and ultimately results.”

The Focal product line from CMS is an integrated range of innovative software tools that address the major fundamentals of radiotherapy clinical workflow. Focal is a Windows-based planning platform that includes advanced contouring, simulation, image fusion, and plan review capabilities, and combines an intuitive user interface with easy-to-use automation tools to increase overall planning efficiency and streamline clinical workflow. Focal is fully digital imaging and communications in medicine (DICOM)-compliant and interconnects seamlessly with CMS's XiO and Monaco planning solutions along with other third-party systems.

With CMS Direct Access, users can access these planning tools securely from any networked PC via a high-speed internet connection, increasing resource flexibility and productivity. The system also supports remote and distributed planning models, facilitating the sharing of resources and expertise inside the hospital and across regional networks.
