MEDICA 2010 Confirms Recovery of the Medical Technology Industry

The concurrent staging of the MEDICA 2010 and COMPAMED 2010 international trade fairs have confirmed that medical technology and product manufacturers have overcome the recent economic and financial crisis.

The MEDICA 2010 international trade fair and World Forum for Medicine congress enjoyed a record 4,400 exhibitors from 64 nations that offered a complete range of new products, systems, and services for inpatient and outpatient care to the 137,200 visitors from over 100 nations participating in the events. About 50% of the attendees came from countries other than Germany, and 72% of them had decision-making authority.

"The number of supporting institutions for clinics is decreasing; this concentration of demand means the market is becoming dominated by ever-larger suppliers with centrally organized purchasing departments. Which makes those travelling to Düsseldorf particularly high-caliber decision-makers,” said Joachim Schäfer, managing director of Messe Düsseldorf (Germany) explaining the quantity, quality, and international presence of the visitors.

On the MEDICA 2010 exhibitor side, 72% of the companies came from nations other than Germany, with the leading foreign exhibitors coming from the United States, Italy, Great Britain, France, and China. Innovations presented by exhibitors included hybrid operating rooms, where surgeons can operate and use imaging processes at the same time; solutions for efficient dataflow between the inpatient and outpatient sectors; and mobile health applications for the recording and remote transmission of vital signs. As in past shows, Messe Düsseldorf North America (MDNA; Chicago, IL, USA) organized two successful US Pavilions, where 173 companies presented their latest technologies.

At the concomitant COMPAMED 2010 international trade fair, which highlighted high-tech solutions in medical technology, 575 exhibitors from 37 nations presented a wide spectrum of technology and service solutions for use in the medical industry to over 16,000 visitors. Products ranged from new materials, components, primary products, and packaging and services to complex micro systems and complete contract manufacturing. COMPAMED also featured a US Pavilion organized by MDNA, with products presented by eight exhibitors. Overall, 55 U.S. companies exhibited at COMPAMED 2010.

"MEDICA is an impressive 'display window' of the health industry; however, Germany's leading role in the medical sector is not known everywhere. Therefore it is important for this sector to be featured center stage," remarked German Chancellor Angela Merkel during her visit to the fair.

The dates for MEDICA 2011 and COMPAMED 2011 have already been set, and both events will launch on November 16, 2011, once again in Düsseldorf (Germany).
