Royal Philips Electronics (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), a diversified healthcare provider and Lumilier Corporation (Memphis, TN, USA), provider of ultraviolet (UV) germicidal air disinfection products, announced their agreement to collaborate on a solution to combat microbial contamination in hospitals. Under the new partnership, Lumilier's Tru-D, total-room UV disinfector, will be distributed directly through Philips Healthcare (Best, The Nedherlands).

The agreement aims to combat the incidence of healthcare-acquired infections, which are the most common complication of hospital care and one of the leading causes of death in the United States. The automated, no-touch Tru-D portable UV device helps control pathogens known to contaminate environmental surfaces.

"Manual cleaning can be fraught with human error -- especially in hard-to-reach places," says Jeffrey Stephens, MD, professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Mercer University School of Medicine, Medical Center of Central Georgia. "The Tru-D Sensor360 technology measures the reflected dose of UV light to reduce pathogens on visible surfaces, in primary shadows, behind and below bed rails, trays, doorknobs, IV poles and portable equipment."

"Tru-D is a simple option to help eliminate pathogens," says William Carroll Thompson, vice president of service for patient monitoring at Philips Healthcare. "As a company dedicated to simplifying healthcare, we are very pleased to bring this innovative solution to our customers and to their patients."
