Operating Room Equipment Market Set to Experience Growth

Growth in the global operating room (OR) equipment market will be driven by an increase in the number of ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs), growth in medical tourism in emerging economies, decreasing material costs, and technological innovations. These are the latest findings of GlobalData (Princeton, NJ, USA), a leading business information company.

The market for operating tables is expected to be driven by an increase in the demand for specialized tables for complex surgical procedures, such as hip replacement procedures, which require limb rotation. Other innovations in operating room tables established in recent years include a multifunction spine system attachment for surgical tables, which provides prone, lateral, and supine positioning, as well as improved eye and airway visibility and unrestricted C-arm access. Other improved general operating tables can slide, rotate, and transport patients with a single caregiver throughout the perioperative area. Another modular-design operating table can use up to three motorized joint pairs, making it possible to use remote controls to position the patient quickly, safely, and precisely.

The top five players in the global operating room equipment market, with a combined share of 64% of the market, include Getinge AB (Getinge, Sweden), Steris, TRUMPF Medical Systems (Stuttgart, Germany), Skytron, and Bertchtold (Tuttlingen, Germany). Getinge AB holds the top market share of 15%, with a leading position attributed to technological innovations, a strong financial position, and rapid expansion in the emerging markets. Steris is at the second position with a market share of 14%, followed by TRUMPF Medical Systems and Skytron, with market shares of 12% each.

Another important role is played by operating room lights, with proper intensity of light and reduced heat generation being two important requirements of the operating room light. New light emitting diode (LED) lights feature optical enhancements that exceed traditional halogen intensities without the heat, including a 40% greater intensity and double the adjustable spot size. Surgeons can also choose the optimum balance between bright, high intensity illuminations or soft white, non-glare surgical lighting for each procedure. The market for operating room lights is expected to grow due to an increased shift from halogen to LED platforms.

The global operating room (OR) equipment market was valued at US$770.6 million in 2010, and is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.6%, projected to reach $989 million in 2017.
