General Electric Co., through its healthcare IT business, GE Healthcare (Chalfont St. Giles, UK), and Microsoft Corp. (Redmond, WA, USA) announced the completion of their joint venture, Caradigm (Bellevue, Washington, USA).

Caradigm focuses on improving healthcare quality and patient experience through the use of real-time systems, an open technology platform, and collaborative clinical applications. Plans for the joint venture were first announced on Dec. 7, 2011, and the final agreement was completed on June 1, 2012.

The Caradigm board of directors and leadership team is comprised of executives from both parent companies. Caradigm appointed Michael Simpson, a former GE Healthcare executive, as CEO, Lauren Salata, formerly of Care Innovations, an Intel and GE company, as chief financial officer, and Michael Willingham, formerly of Philips Healthcare, as quality assurance and regulatory affairs executive.

“The combination of people and technology from GE Healthcare and Microsoft will allow us to drive the dramatic change that is needed in healthcare,” said Mr. Simpson. “By forming Caradigm, we can offer innovative healthcare solutions, including an open platform and tools that enable software developers around the world to address the complexities of population health today.”

Caradigm will feature products from both GE Healthcare and Microsoft, including Microsoft’s Amalga health-care data system, a unified health enterprise platform that retrieves and displays patient information, such as data from medical imaging procedures, lab results, and surgeries.

Caradigm will be headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, USA, with significant presence in other cities around the world.
