Stryker (Kalamazoo, MI, USA) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Berchtold (Tuttlingen, Germany), a world-class surgical infrastructure equipment company.

The purchase, for an enterprise value of USD 172 million, will merge the Berchtold portfolio of surgical tables, equipment booms, critical care, and lighting systems with the Stryker Endoscopy existing operating room (OR) and intensive care unit (ICU) equipment portfolio. The Berchtold range includes the CHROMOPHARE OR lights, the OPERON OR tables, as well as the ceiling pendants TELETOM. System components include the ChromoVision camera systems. The combined portfolio is intended to create a comprehensive, quality-focused, range of products to satisfy a wide range of customer needs around the globe.

“We are committed to offering innovative, best-in-class operating room infrastructure equipment,” said Timothy J. Scannell, group president of MedSurg and Neurotechnology at Stryker. “This acquisition delivers on that commitment by strengthening our portfolio and allowing us to address rapidly evolving customer requirements for operating room design.”

In December 2013, Stryker announced it was buying Patient Safety Technologies (Irvine, CA, USA) for its bar code technology. In the same month the company also purchased Mako Surgical (Ft. Lauderdale, FL, USA), a maker of robotic arm assisted orthopedic surgery technology.
