FDA Approval Clears Path for BCI Integration with Personal Computing Devices

Paradromics Inc. has received an approval letter from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanding the types of computing devices that may be used with its investigational brain-computer interface (BCI) platform. The approval establishes a pathway to support compatible personal, internet-connected devices through Convey, the user-facing system that translates decoded neural intent into communication and computer control. Following an agreed deployment and testing process, personal devices such as laptops, tablets, and phones can be added without requiring the company to seek approval for each new device.
Convey is designed to connect decoded neural signals to the digital environment. Paradromics’ neural decoding software processes brain activity to determine intended output, and Convey enables that output to operate supported devices for communication and computer control. The platform is initially being evaluated for restoring communication and computer access in people with severe motor impairment.
The FDA-approved Connect-One Early Feasibility Study is assessing the Connexus Brain-Computer Interface, including its ability to safely restore communication and enable computer-device control. The expanded device pathway does not alter the study’s clinical care model; rather, it increases flexibility to evaluate how BCI-enabled control can function within the personal digital ecosystems of future users.

That means being able to connect with the products and technology that are already part of your life. This approval begins clearing the way toward a BCI platform that can move with the user rather than tethering him or her to a fixed computing environment,” said Matt Angle, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Paradromics.
