Terumo Neuro (Aliso Viejo, CA, USA) signed an agreement to acquire Arsenal Medical Inc. (Waltham, MA, USA), a privately held, clinical-stage biomaterials company. The proposed acquisition would add NeoCast, an investigational next-generation liquid embolic technology for chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH), to Terumo Neuro’s neurovascular portfolio. The transaction is intended to advance differentiated neurovascular technologies for physicians and patients.

NeoCast is a solvent-free, non-adhesive biomaterial intended for embolization of the middle meningeal artery (MMA). It is engineered for controlled delivery and predictable distal penetration. The material is designed to avoid the solvents or adhesives associated with many embolic devices.

cSDH is a significant and growing neurological condition in aging populations, with risks of cognitive decline, disability, and notable mortality within one year. While surgical drainage is common, postoperative recurrence remains a challenge, and MMA embolization is emerging as an adjunct or alternative approach.

Arsenal Medical has advanced NeoCast through first-in-human clinical experience and recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration Investigational Device Exemption approval for RADIANT, a pivotal randomized, multicenter study. RADIANT will evaluate NeoCast as an adjunct to surgery for symptomatic subacute and chronic subdural hematoma, and the first patients have been enrolled. The prospective study will compare NeoCast to the Onyx Liquid Embolic System as an adjunct to surgery.

Final results from the EMBO-02 first-in-human study met primary feasibility and safety endpoints, with 96% of subjects achieving at least 50% hematoma volume reduction and 75% achieving complete resolution at final follow-up. Among 24 patients, 79% were treated with embolization alone, and 10 were treated without general anesthesia. Seventy-nine percent also showed improvement in modified Rankin Scale and quality-of-life measures through 180 days. NeoCast remains investigational and is not approved for commercial sale in the United States. The proposed transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, and financial terms were not disclosed.

“NeoCast represents a compelling opportunity to advance what could be a game-changing innovation in the treatment of chronic subdural hematoma. As MMA embolization emerges as an important new treatment option, this purpose-developed, next-generation liquid embolic technology has the potential to make a meaningful impact for physicians and patients, while supporting our mission to preserve and restore brain health. We are impressed by the progress Arsenal Medical has made and look forward to combining our global neurovascular expertise with its differentiated technology platform following the close of the transaction,” said Carsten Schroeder, CEO, Terumo Neuro.
