Adac and Elekta in IMRT Alliance

A new global agreement for the joint marketing, sales, and development programs for intensity modulated radiotherapy treatment (IMRT) has been announced by Adac Laboratories of Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands) and Elekta Oncology Systems (Crawley, UK; USA). The alliance is designed to utilize the strengths of both companies, combining Adac's expertise in inverse planning with Elekta's world leadership in linear accelerator design, making it easier for more hospitals to use the latest technology to treat their cancer patients.

IMRT involves a complex sequence of processes, including planning, prescription transfer to a linear accelerator, treatment delivery, and delivery verification. The new clinical solution integrates Adac's ePinnacle treatment planning. The open connectivity of Elekta's Precise Treatment System results in seamless information transfer between ePinnacle and the linear accelerator. The package streamlines the radiotherapy process and allows providers to focus more directly on the clinical care of their patients, rather than on the technology.

"In order to make the benefits of IMRT available to more hospitals and their patients on a routine basis, practical, clinical solutions are required,” said Peter Gaccione, vice president of Elekta Oncology Systems. "Through this partnership our customers now have access to a completely integrated IMRT process, with best-in-class solutions packaged together very competitively, making one-stop IMRT shopping with Elekta very attractive.”
