In a move to expand its product offerings for women's health, Boston Scientific Corp. (Natick, MA, USA) has agreed to acquire BEI Medical Systems Company, Inc. (Teterboro, NJ, USA) for about US$95 million. BEI will become part of Boston Scientific's Endosurgery group.

BEI develops and markets less-invasive technology for treating excessive uterine bleeding due to benign causes. The company's Hydro ThermAblator (HTA) system is used to eliminate the tissue responsible for menstrual bleeding by endometrial ablation. The HTA allows gynecologists to perform ablation under direct visualization on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia.

"The Hydro ThermAblator system is the only FDA-approved global endometrial ablation system that provides physicians with both direct hysteroscopic visualization of the procedure and the ability to treat irregularly shaped uterine cavities,” noted Steve Moreci, senior vice president of Boston Scientific and group president, Endosurgery. Boston Scientific develops and markets medical devices used in a broad range of interventional medical specialties.
