In a move that will allow the company to apply endoscopy to the reflux disease market, Boston Scientific Corp. (Natick, MA, USA) has agreed to acquire Enteric Medical Technologies, Inc. (EMT, Foster City, CA, USA). Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

EMT is the designer and manufacturer of Enteryx, a liquid polymer for the treatment of gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD). The polymer solidifies into a sponge-like material when injected into tissue, augmenting the lower esophageal sphincter and helping to prevent or reduce reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus. Performed under intravenous sedation, the procedure takes about 30 minutes. Enteryx has received the CE Mark. Following the closing with Boston Scientific, Enteryx will be marketed through the Microvasive Endoscopy division. Boston Scientific develops and manufactures medical devices for a broad range of interventional medical specialties.

"The acquisition of Enteric Medical Technologies provides us with a significant opportunity to participate in the GERD market using an endoscopic-management approach,” said Michael Phalen, president, Microvasive Endoscopy. "We believe the Enteryx technology platform could become a significant nonpharmaceutical solution for physicians treating patients with this disease.”
