In a move to strengthen its surgical systems business, Getinge AB (Getinge, Sweden) has agreed to acquire Heraeus Med Technology (Hanau, Germany) and its US subsidiary. Terms were not disclosed.

Heraeus Med Technology is a leading producer of surgical lighting systems and ceiling service units for operating theaters. In 2001, the company had sales of around US$52 million. It will be integrated into the surgical systems business of Getinge. Heraeus Med Technology is currently a division of Heraeus Holding GmbH, a precious metals and technology group.

Getinge is an important provider of health care products and services. The company's surgical systems business began with the acquisition of Maquet in 2000, a leading manufacturer of surgical tables. In 2001, Getinge acquired ALM, a manufacturer of surgical lights. The acquisition of Heraeus is designed to make Getinge an important provider of operating theater equipment.

"We are pleased to welcome the Heraeus people as new members of the business area Surgical Systems within the Getinge Group,” said Dr. Heribert Balhaus, vice president, Surgical Systems of Getinge AB. "Heraeus Med's product portfolio perfectly strengthens Getinge's competence in OR-infrastructure. With the global reach of Getinge's sales force, we will open new opportunities for Heraeus Med.”
