Following several years of developing and distributing products utilizing the photonic ablation technology of CardioFocus, Inc. (Norton, MA, USA), Edwards Lifesciences Corp. (Irvine, CA, USA) has acquired the surgical assets from CardioFocus to treat cardiac arrhythmias using this photonic ablation technology. Posted on 15 Jan 2003
CardioFocus retains its business involving the use of photonic ablation to treat atrial fibrillation percutaneously. Edwards retains an equity investment in CardioFocus. CardioFocus is a developer and marketer of proprietary disposable catheter products for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders using diffuse laser energy.
Edwards focuses on cardiovascular disease, and the business acquired from CardioFocus will be a useful addition to its portfolio of cardiovascular products. Edwards is currently conducting a phase II clinical trial on its endovascular graft system for repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms, which uses a catheter-based delivery device to place a permanent graft that will reinforce the wall of the aorta in the affected area.
