In a move that will add to its portfolio of products for spine surgery, Synthes-Stratec (Oberdorf, Switzerland) has agreed to acquire Spine Solutions, Inc. (SSI, New York, NY, USA) for US$350 million. Spine Solutions will operate as an independent subsidiary of Synthes-Stratec.

Spine Solutions is a developer and marketer of products for spinal surgery, most notably a total artificial disc system called ProDisc, designed to reduce spinal disorders and back pain and restore mobility to the lumbar and cervical spine after surgery. The design of the instrumentation permits less-invasive surgery and is user-friendly to surgeons. The system has been implanted in more than 2,300 patients worldwide with excellent follow-up results.

"ProDisc, a patented protected system, is a promising new technology that could transform surgery and substantially improve patient outcomes,” said Hansjorg Wyss, chairman and CEO of Synthes-Stratec. "We are excited that the Spine Solutions team will join us to bring this product to market and add to our broad range of proven treatment solutions for spine surgeons and patients.”
