The purchase of the global intravascular ultrasound and functional measurement businesses of Jomed (Beringen, Switzerland) has been announced by Volcano Therapeutics, Inc.(Rancho Cordova, CA, USA). Financial terms were not disclosed.

The purchase supports Volcano's strategy to build on its Virtual Histology intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) technology being developed. Volcano plans to add this technology to the installed based of more than 1,200 Jomed/Endosonics IVUS consoles currently in clinical use worldwide. Volcano's intravascular thermography technology also integrates well with the products from Jomed's Cardiometrics functional measurement business, which includes the pressure and flow wire lines. Volcano has relocated its headquarters to the former US headquarters of Jomed in Rancho Cordova, CA.

Jomed, incorporated in The Netherlands and formerly listed on the Swiss exchange, merged with Endosonics in 2000 but was declared bankrupt in May 2003. The company's coronary and peripheral interventional business was purchased by Abbott Vascular Devices, and its mitral valve business was sold to Edwards Life Sciences.

"This acquisition is consistent with Volcano's vision and strategy to provide interventional cardiologists with clinically relevant information to direct specific therapies that will significantly improve clinical outcomes,” said Scott Huennekens, president and CEO of Volcano Therapeutics.
