Biosafety in the laboratory is critical when work involves infectious diseases and toxins, as well as in cell and tissue culturing, where product contamination must be avoided, particularly amidst the current COVID-19 pandemic. Posted on 29 May 2020
Air Science (Fort Myers, FL, USA) manufactures a complete series of high efficiency ductless fume hoods, ductless workstations, laboratory filtration products, and custom enclosures designed to protect the user, the process and the environment from hazardous vapors, fumes, and particulates. The company’s products and manufacturing processes are designed to minimize environmental impact to the community, and to support efforts to comply with LEED and other recommended practices in laboratory and facility management.
The Purair BIO Class II, Type A2 Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) from Air Science provide a primary containment work area for life science research, cell culture processing, and other applications where protection of the user, the work product, and the environment, and mitigation of cross-contamination on the work surface are needed. Prevention of lab acquired infections to personnel can also be achieved by reducing potential exposure to droplets or splashes, preventing contaminants from escaping the work area.
The Purair BIO provides a safe laboratory workspace using optimum airflow design combined with an integrated HEPA filtration system. Room air is drawn in through the intake grille on the front of the unit, then under the work surface and directed to the top of the cabinet where it passes through a HEPA filter. Negative pressure is created inside the cabinet resulting in a primary containment work area while the HEPA filtration supplies clean air to the work surface in a vertical laminar flow pattern. These airflow patterns provide an optimum air curtain on the front opening, maintaining personnel and product protection. The exhaust HEPA filter traps biohazardous particles prior to the air being exhausted back into the laboratory, preserving environmental protection.
The Purair BIO is designed with a single EC blower motor for ease of use, reliability, and to promote low cost of ownership. It includes multiple service connections for maximum flexibility, and duplex electrical outlets with splash-proof, UL listed covers. Its user interface combines ergonomics, safety, and aesthetics with a 10 degree angled window design that reduces operator head and elbow discomfort, as well as eye strain and fatigue. The Purair BIO BSC is certified for safety and performance in accordance with NSF/ANSI Standard 49 and EN12469 which certifies Class II, Type A2 biological safety cabinets are suitable for working with biosafety agents at levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. Air Science 4-foot models are certified by NSF.
