Blood-Pressure Monitor Works in Emergency Settings

A study of a noninvasive blood pressure monitor in emergency settings, including a helicopter, a ground ambulance, and a jet airliner, has shown that the monitor can work effectively in all those settings.

The blood-pressure monitor, called Vasotrac APM205A, was also shown to be effective regardless of age, gender, or body build. Blood pressure can be a critical element in acutely ill or injured patients, and monitoring is of great importance. However, devices to provide more and better blood pressure data in the emergency medical services (EMS) transport environment are scarce. Vascotrac is the product of Medwave, Inc. (Danvers, MA, USA). Medwave is ISO certified and all of its products are CE-marked. The company, which markets its products in Europe, Asia, and the United States, recently received the Frost & Sullivan Market Engineering Award for Technology Innovation.

"The experience shows us that the Vasotrac technology can function effectively and be a potential benefit to patients in environments that can challenge many types of medical devices,” said Rich Niemczyk, marketing manager for Medwave. The study has been accepted for oral presentation at the annual meting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in Orlando (FL, USA).
