A new resource for emergency department (ED) doctors is the ED Technology Page (www.emedhome.com/edtech.cfm), a one-stop, user-friendly site where they can learn about new technology for implementing electronic medical records or emergency department information systems, find out how to select a vendor, and learn how to implement a system in their own department.

The page features articles and white papers that discuss various computer systems, explain how to select a vendor, and relate the experiences of other emergency departments. In addition, there are links to industry news of relevance to emergency medicine and links to abstracts of journal articles examining the use of computers in emergency medicine. The page shows how to interact with vendors and request information. It is intended as a starting point to understanding the terminology, available options, and procedure for computerizing the emergency department.

The new site was developed by emedhome.com, an educational website in emergency medicine. Launched in February 2003, emedhome.com is an educational website for emergency physicians, attracting more than 70,000 visits each month, and free of commercial influence.

"We were overwhelmed with requests from emergency physicians who suddenly found themselves in a position of having to develop a technology system for their department and choose a vendor, yet had no idea where to start,” noted Rick Nunez, M.D., president of emedhome.com.
