European Anesthesiologists Unite

For the first time, a single body exists to represent European anesthesiologists and to promote the highest clinical and scientific standards of anesthesia in Europe.

The European Society of Anesthesiologists (ESA), the European Academy of Anesthesiology (EAA), and the European Confederation of European National Societies of Anesthesiologists (CENSA) have been united in ESA. ESA's current membership is more than 5,000, but as a result of the amalgamation ESA has the potential to soon represent more than 60,000 European anesthesiologists.

The headquarters of the ESA are in Brussels (Belgium). Although predominantly a European society, the ESA membership base includes affiliate members from countries around the world. The official journal of ESA is the European Journal of Anesthesiology.

The aims of the ESA are to promote the exchange of information among anesthesiologists in Europe; to raise the standards of the specialty by fostering and encouraging education, research, and scientific progress; to promote and protect the interests of its members; and to promote improvements in safety and quality of care of patients undergoing anesthesia. ESA also organizes the examination for the European Diploma in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care that serves to raise the standards of the specialty. Through its National Anesthesia Society Committee, the ESA is linked to the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists.
