A new cardiology information system facilitates accurate cardiology diagnosis by providing critical clinical data from a single point of access, and improves patient care by enhancing communication through the integration of cardiology, radiology, and wider applications. The product portfolio includes Agfa Heartlab Cardiovascular--the first fully web-based cardiovascular information system in Europe. The system was developed by Agfa HealthCare Business Group (Mortsel, Belgium).

The new range of applications is made possible through Agfa's acquisition of US-based cardiology specialist Heartlab (Westerly, RI, USA), a leading designer and supplier of image and information management networks for cardiology. Its acquisition follows a successful collaboration begun in December 2003 within a distribution agreement for Agfa's Impax for cardiology. This created the groundwork for developing a novel approach to hospitals, enabling cardiology to benefit from both sophisticated systems and the capability to interface with radiology and the wider hospital enterprise.

Commenting on the Heartlab acquisition and its benefits, Luc Thijs, vice president radiology and departmental solutions, Agfa, said, "At Agfa, we recognized that we could combine our expertise and skills gained in radiology, with Heartlab's strong clinical knowledge and reputation in cardiology, to create a global center of excellence.”
