New disposable pulse oximetry sensors, used to measure blood-oxygen saturation, offer doctors an expanded choice of sensors to meet their clinical requirements.Posted on 09 Jan 2006
The new single-patient-use SpO2 pulse oximetry sensors were developed by Philips Medical Systems (Best, The Netherlands). The sensors have been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are intended to be used primarily for infant and neonatal patients. These patients frequently have sensitive skin, and the new disposable sensors are designed to provide greater comfort while maintaining a secure fit, by using soft foam material and special adhesives.
The infant disposable sensor can be used on patients weighing 3-10 kg. The neonatal disposable sensor comfortably fits a range of patient sizes, from under 3 kg for a neonate to 10-20 kg for a larger infant and even over 40 kg for a large patient.
These disposable sensors are compatible with qualified monitors made by Philips, Agilent, Hewlett-Packard, and others. In addition, all Philips sensors are compatible with Philips FAST-SpO2 algorithm technology, which can discern a steady signal during patient movement and supports a wide array of SpO2 sensors.
"These two new sensors offer clinicians a wider selection of disposable sensors to better address the needs of their smallest patients,” said Jim Polewaczyk, senior director and general manager, medical consumables, for Philips medical systems. "Now our customers can choose from an even broader portfolio of both reusable and disposable sensors for every area of their hospital.”
