A dialyzer designed to take into account the many complexities of pediatric chronic hemodialysis has been approved for both chronic and acute use in children.

The Polyflux 6H dialyzer, developed by Gambro Renal Products (Stockholm, Sweden), is a high-flux, steam-sterilized, pediatric dialyzer, designed for small patients, including children. The Polyflux dialyzer is intended for chronic and acute applications in hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration, and hemofiltration, taking into consideration blood flow, body weight, and extracorporeal blood volume. The dialyzer is compatible with all Phoenix dialysis systems, and has the same fiber configuration as the adult size dialyzers. The dialyzer has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

"Gambro is very excited about bringing this new product to the pediatric market,” said Helene Olefsky, marketing manager, Gambro Renal Products. "It provides all of the benefits of Polyflux high-flux dialyzers for use in a pediatric application.”

Approximately 1% of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in the United States alone are younger than 20 years old. On the positive side, pediatric dialysis patients have a low incidence of ESRD, and many receive transplants, decreasing the overall population size.
