Emergency Medical Information Displayed on Digital Card

A digital device the size of a business card stores and displays essential emergency medical information at the touch of a button.

The compact electronic device, called the EMI 911 rCard, has a full-color, high-resolution screen that displays medical charts, photos, and text instantly, providing critical data to doctors, nurses, and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Subscribers may load and update the card, transferring data to and from a PC via a universal serial bus (USB) cable that accompanies the card. The cable also serves as a charger for the card's battery.

The EMI 911 rCard was developed by Emergency Medical Information (EMI, Warner Robins, GA, USA). To load the card, the holder first creates a personal health record on EMI's secure, password-protected web site. If the card is lost or fails, the health record data can quickly and easily be downloaded to a new card. In addition, if the cardholder fails to charge the card's battery or the card is damaged in an accident, emergency medical personnel can call a toll-free number on the back of the card to access key information.

"There are multiple factors that make it harder for doctors to treat patients in emergency conditions,” said Tracy Evans, president of EMI. "With the EMI 911 rCard, physicians immediately know what drugs a patient has been taking, as well as the dose level of each, and can ensure that future medications are prescribed safely.”
