A discrete monitor displays up-to-the minute health metrics including calories burned, activity levels, sleep state, and other important metabolic and lifestyle information.

The SenseWear display, the latest enhancement to the SenseWear body monitoring system, is intended for patients with chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity, and diabetes, and is designed to increase patient access to health data. Patients and their physicians can then use the data to identify the behaviors that best promote weight loss and healthy living, ultimately lowering the risks associated with their chronic conditions.

An armband that continuously records an array of information collects the physiologic data. The resulting information is organized into graphs and reports that clearly display the patient's energy expenditure (calories burned), duration, and level of physical activity, number of steps taken, and sleep/wake states. The monitor, which receives data from the armband, can be worn as a watch or clipped to the patient's clothing, making the data constantly accessible. The SenseWear armband provides similar accuracy as the doubly labeled water method, considered the gold standard in measuring energy expenditure (EE). SenseWear is a product of BodyMedia (Pittsburgh, PA, USA).

"With the SenseWear body monitoring system, patients and physicians have a tool that accurately translates how personal day-to-day activities impact the progress they are making towards managing disease and achieving a healthy lifestyle,” said Dr. Bret Goodpaster, from the department of clinical exercise physiology at the University of Pittsburgh (PA, USA). "For patients who want up-to-the-minute access to health data, the SenseWear display makes it even easier to monitor activities and remain constantly aware of how their behaviors are affecting their bodies.”
