A new blood gas and electrolyte analyzer that can report results on any or all analytes within 60 seconds has been especially designed and developed for near-patient testing sites, such as the intensive care unit (ICU), critical care unit (CCU), operating room (OR), and emergency room (ER). The system's intuitive sample management alerts clinicians to blood clots, bubbles, and short-sampling. Called the Rapidpoint 400 Critical Care Analyzer, it is the only maintenance-free, self-contained measurement cartridge now available, states the developer, Bayer Diagnostics (Tarrytown, NY, USA). After 750 tests or 28 days, the cartridge must be replaced, which takes a few seconds and is demonstrated through on-board video instruction. Through Bayer Diagnostics' proprietary Rapidlink Information System, all information can be managed electronically, eliminating paperwork while satisfying regulatory requirements.
"For any company to be successful in near-patient testing, information management will be key,” noted Fran Tuttle, senior vice president, Bayer Diagnostics. "The Rapidpoint 400 is the only system with both Ethernet and serial ports, which allow for seamless connectivity to any hospital's LIS, HIS, or CIS, thereby giving healthcare providers the information they need when they need it for rapid patient intervention.”
