An automatic wireless system performs daily telemetric surveillance of cardiac patients and the technical status of their implanted cardiac device (ICD), without requiring patient activation.

The Biotronik Home Monitoring system uses an intelligent "traffic light" system, which provides efficient and convenient remote monitoring of patients with ICDs and other devices, thus providing earlier detection of serious arrhythmic events. Using an intuitive, color-coded signaling concept, the system quickly and easily identifies patients with the most clinically relevant events to streamline clinic workflow; ensuring efficient use of clinic time by reducing unnecessary in-office follow-ups, so by improving patient care. Daily information is automatically evaluated and prioritized through the intelligent traffic light system and presented in a comprehensive "CardioReport,” a status summary available on the Biotronik Home Monitoring secure website that enables physicians to quickly review the most important information at a glance.

The fully automatic system also enables early detection of clinically relevant changes in patient or device status, allowing prompt intervention to prevent further worsening in a patient's condition. If an important status change occurs, the system generates an alert notification via email, text messaging, or fax to the physician. Intelligent workflow tools facilitate the establishment of unique collaborative care networks, allowing multiple clinics and physicians to simultaneously manage an individual patient. This collaborative approach enhances the quality-of-life and the care of patients with cardiovascular disease, as well as workflow efficiencies within one or more clinics. The Biotronik Home Monitoring system is a product of Biotronik (Berlin, Germany), and is available across the company's entire product portfolio of pacemakers, ICDs, and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices.

"Biotronik has set a milestone with the launch of its new Home Monitoring system: an advanced, evidence-based remote monitoring technology, with early detection of arrhythmias and other clinically relevant events, delivering simplified yet safe and efficient patient care," said Professor Pedro Brugada, M.D., director of the heart rhythm management Institute at the Free University of Brussels (Belgium).

"We invite physicians from around the world to try the only clinically proven, wireless remote monitoring technology designed to enhance patient care and optimize clinic resources," said Marlou Janssen, vice president of global marketing and sales in the cardiac rhythm management department at Biotronik. "The significant enhancements to Biotronik Home Monitoring are offered as a straightforward and simple solution."
