The Bayer Contour universal serial bus (USB) blood glucose meter possesses proprietary Glucofacts Deluxe diabetes management software that offers customizable features such as intuitive pre- and post-meal marking. The device automatically synchronizes the date and time with that of the computer, and continues to do so whenever there is at least a 30-minute difference between the meter and the computer. An autolog feature marks results as taken before or after a meal, with a single press of the test button during the 5 second test time; it thus associates results with the patients' prandial state, helping to recognize testing trends. When the feature is on, a result will not appear unless marked as before meal, after meal, or no mark, unless the result is above or below the set target range or outside the meter range; in this case, the autolog is overridden in order to display test information promptly.

A bright color display screen visible in any light shows average, high, and low blood glucose readings and an illuminated test strip port allows testing in low-light conditions. The drive unit also includes 500 megabytes of space that can be used for storage of personal diabetes information. A rechargeable battery can charge from any USB port, or via a supplied wall charger. The Bayer Contour USB blood glucose meter is a product of Bayer (Leverkusen, Germany), and has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Bayer recommends that patients let the meter and test strips adjust to ambient temperature change as necessary. As a rule, they should allow 20 minutes for the meter to adjust to the temperature of the new location before performing a blood glucose test.
