A new acute care ventilator delivers advanced breath technology for enhanced patient comfort and clinician ease of use.Posted on 11 Mar 2014
The Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator system is intended for patients ranging from neonatal to adult. An innovative user interface features a highly customizable display with intuitive screen navigation that controls advanced synchrony tools, helping clinicians set the ventilator to their patients’ unique needs and providing the appropriate level of breath support. The system features Proportional Assist Ventilation Plus (PAV+) technology that provides smarter pumping to optimally synchronize with every patient, which could potentially allow many patients to get off the ventilator earlier.

Other features of the system include ventilator assurance, which in the event of system failures guarantees that the system will continue to deliver ventilatory support as close to the preset settings as feasible. A built-in stand-by mode pauses ventilation when the patient is disconnected and preserves settings, auto-detects the patient upon reconnection, and automatically resumes correct ventilation, all without the need to push additional buttons. The system also features an integrated expiratory filtration system that provides a high level of safety from cross contamination for both patients and staff members.
A digital communication board provides multiple USB ports for connections to external drives and a high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) output port that can be used to project the touch screen display externally. The system also features several options for connecting the ventilator to external systems, such a hospital electronic medical record (EMR) system. The Puritan Bennett 980 ventilator is a product of Covidien (Dublin, Ireland), and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“We believe mechanical ventilation should be natural enough to enable patients to breathe on their own more quickly,” said James E. Willett, vice president and general manager of respiratory solutions at Covidien. “The Puritan Bennett 980 ventilator provides clinicians with a simple, safe, and smart way to care for patients.”
