A new electrocardiogram (ECG) system integrates the six chest electrodes used to acquire the ECG into one thin, flexible array for efficient application. The system is designed for use by paramedics.

Called Uni-Lead, the system accommodates almost all adults with a single ECG electrode array. By substituting one-step electrode placement for individual lead wires, the Uni-Lead sensor array is designed to speed application time and facilitate the acquisition of accurate, reliable, and repeatable electrocardiograms. Uni-Lead also simplifies training by reducing the time needed to teach technicians how to acquire a 12-lead exam. The system was developed by Unilead International (Lafayette, CA, USA) and is being marketed by Medtronic Physio-Control (Redmond, WA, USA).

"Early diagnosis of heart attacks in the prehospital setting and emergency department is critical to improving patient care and saving lives,” said Jon Tremmel, president of Medtronic Physio-Control. "The simplicity and accuracy of the Uni-Lead system eliminates many of the problems now associated with acquiring 12-lead exams.”
