Alliance to Develop Diagnostics for High-Risk Heart Patients

A partnership has been formed to develop diagnostics that can help cardiologists determine when it is safe to release patients from the cardiac care unit (CCU) by identifying those patients at higher risk of sudden cardiac death. The alliance teams Siemens Medical Solutions (Erlangen, Germany) with Reynolds Medical (London, UK).

One of the partnership's first products is expected to be a cardiac analysis station (CAS). Based on the Infinity patient monitoring system of Siemens and the Pathfinder Holter system of Reynolds, the new CAS will enable cardiologists to analyze heart rate variability, ST-deviations, QT abnormalities and arrhythmias for the previous 24-hour period for any patient in coronary care. The station will also be able to provide pre-discharge reports, assessment of the success of reperfusion therapies, and determination of second-heart attack risk through the analysis of heart-rate variability. Doctors will be able to examine a complete set of data quickly and at the point of care, which will aid diagnosis and treatment planning.
