A new portable prenatal monitoring device combines separate measurements of uterine activity and the fetal heart rate into a single simple display.

The visualization of the relationship between the fetal heart rate and uterine activity assists in the assessment of fetal condition during late-term pregnancy. The device weighs less than five pounds and can be battery- or line-operated. Battery operations plus a built-in printer allow uninterrupted testing and point-of-care interpretation. Even if the patient must be moved, there is no need to stop the monitoring. The device, called VersaLab APM, is the product of Nicolet Vascular, Inc. (Golden, CO, USA).

"We are pleased to be able to offer a cost-effective product for the professionals dealing with late-term fetal assessment,” said Julie Manning, product manager at Nicolet. "The unique features and pricing of the VersaLab APM allow a larger segment of health-care providers access to this type of testing.”
