New Embolization System for Cerebral Aneurysms

A new embolic system is designed to treat cerebral aneurysms, by combining the safety and ease of use of platinum coils with the filling and healing properties of an expandable polymer. The system, called HydroCoil, has been cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has also received the CE Mark.

The HydroCoil combines a proprietary highly expandable microporous polymer with platinum, microcoil technology. The device was developed by MicroVention, Inc. (Aliso Viejo, CA, USA). Early results are promising, says the company, based on the first use by doctors on 35 patients, where it showed complete filling and an excellent healing response.

"The ability to treat cerebral aneurysms using this minimally invasive technique may allow a greater number of patients who suffer from aneurysms to avoid the morbidity associated with traditional surgical approaches,” said Dr. Pedro Lylyk (Buenos Aires, Argentina), one of the investigators in the early study. A large, multicenter study is in the planning stage.
