Skin Block Protects Emergency Responders

A protective cream that can be worn for hours under latex gloves forms a nonporous shield that can prevent biologic agents from penetrating the skin of emergency response personnel.

The cream also protects hands from hyperhidrosis and allergic reactions to latex gloves. Called Hand Sense, the cream penetrates the epidermal layer of the skin, protecting users from acids, solvents, and chemical and biologic agents. A single application provides protection for four hours regardless of washing or scrubbing the skin. Hand Sense contains no alcohol, silicone, lanolin, or fragrance. The cream is being distributed by North American Safety Products (Frankfort, IL, USA).

"Hand Sense provides us with an important and effective tool for use in blocking agents that harm our personnel,” said Jim Swartzwelder, a firefighter in San Diego (CA, USA). "I think it should be on every fire truck and ambulance, and available to all first responders who never know what they'll be facing when they respond to an emergency.”
