Reflectance Oximeter Can Be Used on Flat Surfaces

A new pulse oximeter, which functions on flat surfaces, utilizes a proprietary method of multi-path light reflection to provide continuous monitoring of pulsatile oxygen saturation levels in hospitalized patients. The oximeter has been cleared for use on the adult forehead by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The technology employs three wavelengths of light and two concentric photo detectors to identify pulse oxygenation and is unique because it can function on a flat surface. Called PRO2, the oximeter was developed by Imagyn Medical Technologies, Inc. (Irvine, CA, USA). The company will seek additional clearances for chest or back placement on patients. Back placement may be especially useful for operating room and neonatal intensive care use, offering comfort and convenience for an awake patient, in contrast to a conventional finger sensor, noted Imagyn.

In development is an intrapartum version that can be used for fetal pulse oximetry monitoring during labor. The flat PRO2 sensor will be touched to the presenting fetal scalp to assess oxygenation status. Feasibility testing has proven that the device is applicable through cervical dilations under 2 cm, amniotic membranes, and fetal hair. Imagyn believes the technology offers obstetricians a truly noninvasive method for oximetry monitoring and enhanced clinical assessment of the baby during birth.
