Anticoagulation Software Improves Patient Safety

New anticoagulation management software, part of a suite of cardiovascular imaging and information systems (CVIS) management tools, helps clinics enhance efficiency and improves patient wellbeing.

The new anticoagulation module aids clinicians by making critical clinical information accessible immediately, thereby improving patient care and safety. The anticoagulation module increases efficiency by automating the workflow to track lab values, dosages, complications, and other factors; makes records immediately accessible, on- or off-site; the module also helps satisfy new U.S. joint commission on the accreditation of healthcare organizations (JCAHO) patient safety goals for anticoagulation therapy, and promotes the quality of the data by eliminating hard-to-read handwritten records and redundant data entry.

If in the past, anticoagulation data input took up to eight hours and the data from the finger-stick test until patient information and plan of care were documented in the electronic medical record (EMR) could take days, with the anticoagulation module the entire process takes just over four minutes and the system allows for more robust documentation in the EMR. Among the other benefits of the module are single-source documentation; mistake-proof lab data transfer via an integrated lab interface system; and direct, real-time results interface with the EMR. Patient assessments are imported to the EMR after each event, ensuring that all clinicians involved in a patient's care have access to data, regardless whether assessment is complete or pending. EMR records are viewable by all of the staff, and access to records is enterprise-wide. The anticoagulation module and the CVIS suite are products of Lumedx (Oakland, CA, USA).

"The management of patients taking Coumadin requires access to, and input of, patient information by multiple people in multiple locations. The anticoagulation module streamlines this workflow dramatically and ensures up-to-date, safe and efficient patient care,” said Rhonda Staton, director of product management at Lumedx.
