An iPhone Web Application Assists Physicians

An online service allows independent clinics and physicians to easily connect with their office and access patient's electronic medical records (EMRs) via an iPhone web application.

The new Apple iPhone web application enables access to Capzule.com, providing physicians with greater flexibility in caring for their patients. Physicians can review patient files on their mobile device, and provide quicker response times when away from the office. They can also view messages, check their schedule, review charts, and write prescriptions.

Doctors who treat patients in more than one location can check on patients between hospital rounds, and nursing home visits. Among the features of the application are a patient summary placed at the top of every chart, an integrated scheduling feature, billing and claims submission for patient charging, and instant messaging and paging solutions for maintaining contact with office staff and delegating additional tasks. Existing computer documents can be converted into common formats and imported for each patient through file upload options placed in the chart online, or with the proprietary desktop software, which can be installed on the office computer. The desktop application can connect to other devices, such as blood analyzers that transmit data in ASTM format, as well as process lab results received in HL7 format. Capzule is a product of Webahn (Lathrup Village, MI, USA), which also offers OvernightScribe.com, an online application for health care providers to manage medical transcriptions.

"Capzule has greatly improved our physicians' quality of life because they can now access charts at anytime from anywhere,” said Iqbal Boxwala, M.D., from Hematology and Oncology Consultants (Royal Oak, MI, USA), a group practice of seven physicians.

"Our mission is to offer small practices affordable, online solutions that are efficient and easy-to-use. We want to help them deliver quality care to their patients,” said Vinu Nair, CEO of Webahn. "By launching the iPhone Web application and lowering the rate plan, we hope to make Capzule.com affordable to the large number of physicians who are turned away by high price tags associated with many other electronic medical record services.”
