Software Solution Optimizes Healthcare Organization Information Flow

A novel information system breaks down the complexities and barriers to critical clinical decision support, regardless of the care setting, by allowing the free flow of information around health organizations and economies.

The LORENZO system uses a service-oriented architecture (SOA) based on international standards and open technologies, offering a wide range of solutions that can be assembled using a series of fundamental building blocks and tools. This enables healthcare providers to manage their processes while at the same time giving secure authorized access to patient information to those who need it, anywhere, and at any time. Care activities within LORENZO, used with the systems plug and play capability, are designed to maximize the retention of existing healthcare information technology (IT) investments. The system is highly scalable and is designed to adapt to existing healthcare IT systems for all points of need--from hospital to community and clinic settings--thus avoiding the need for a costly and risky implementation. Customized for each customer's specific needs, it also provides the flexibility to quickly respond to changing operational, legal, or business requirements.

Workflow Management tools allow role-based access, in-tray display of pending tasks, and a history of highlighted task. Tasks can also be filtered to facilitate prioritizing work load, and task wizards assist in the completion of administrative work. Users can manage and define patient lists according to standard or personalized criteria which can be defined by the specialty the patient is under, patient's location, defined time period, or a combination of all. The patient's problems, allergies, and alerts are managed either directly from LORENZO or via integration with other existing systems. Maintaining the patient context between applications allows for simple and quick application swapping; selecting a patient's details from any list will open that patient's record. The LORENZO system was developed by iSoft (Banbury, UK), a part of the IBA Health Group (Sydney, Australia).

"We are the only group to provide a solution to allow access of GP's to the hospital's records,” said Peter Herrmann, Managing Director of iSoft Central Europe. "Our aim is to give users of our radiology, laboratory, or hospital information systems the opportunity to migrate incrementally to LORENZO, and not force them to change suddenly or abandon their existing systems.”

LORENZO was first conceived in 2003 and was chosen in 2004 as the key solution for the £13 billion national program for information technology (IT) by the United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS).
