IHE Interoperability Key Topic at Upcoming IT Conference

Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) is a joint initiative by healthcare professionals and industry to improve the way computer systems in healthcare share information. Systems developed in accordance with IHE communicate with one another better, are easier to implement, and enable care providers to use information more effectively.

The benefits of easier access from professionals to patient-related information are substantial. All healthcare information may be retrieved at any moment from anywhere, no matter where it was generated (normally scattered among a number of primary care centers, hospitals, private physician's practice), in a private and secure way. That is the basis for the electronic patient record (EPR) that many countries throughout the world are developing. IHE enables such access and is becoming the technical framework for nationwide EPRs.

At the 2010 World of Health IT Conference & Exhibition (WoHIT) taking place during 2010 eHealth week in Barcelona, Spain, March 15-18, 2010, a new approach is being investigated for the venue called Interoperability Showcase. In addition to a demonstration of the interoperability of commercial products, the 2010 Interoperability Showcase will display IHE-based EPR projects in Europe.

The Interoperability Showcase will demonstrate how easy it is for commercial products to interoperate when IHE is supported. Clinical scenarios will be presented to help the public understand how technical frameworks such as IHE, enable access to healthcare information, and encourage its adoption using existing products.

eHealth week 2010 is a conference and exhibition, encompassing the High Level eHealth Conference and WoHIT. The event is focused on truly enhancing information and communications technology (ICT) for healthcare across Europe, attracting government decision makers and industry leaders alike.
