A novel cellular-enabled blood glucose meter (BGM) connects patients and care givers to a real-time mobile health (mHealth) environment, enhancing treatment options.

The Telcare BGM leverages cellular-enabled mHealth tools to securely capture, store, and share real-time clinical data needed to identify at-risk individuals, make targeted and informed interventions, and prevent complications. Features of the BGM device include secure transmission of data to the proprietary MyTelcare.com website, a backlit color screen, rechargeable battery. Blood glucose measurent requires only a small blood sample, and delivers fast results. The device can also interact with dedicated smartphone apps for both iPhone and Android platforms.

An individualized onscreen feedback feature allows healthcare providers to provide automatic feedback and coaching, with messages appearing right on the meter's screen. And when accessing the MyTelcare.com website, the user can view graphs and charts that plot all data into categories such as time of day and events (such as Before Breakfast and After Dinner). Evolving partnerships will allow the device to further assist and engage patients and their caregivers by building additional connections to biometric data. The Telcare BGM is a product of Telcare (Dublin, Ireland), and has received the European Union CE marking of approval.

“Diabetes will affect one in three people born after the year 2000 and has reached pandemic proportions world-wide,” said Prof. Jonathan Javitt, MD, cofounder, vice chairman, and CEO of Telcare. “Our mobile platform unlocks the power of clinical data and creates multiple engagement points amongst those involved in an individual’s care to help minimize complications and improve health outcomes.”
