In Vitro Diagnostic Test for Male Infertility

A new in vitro sperm-hyaluronan binding assay is designed to aid the diagnosis and treatment of male infertility.

The patented assay is based on research conducted by Dr. Gabor Huszar of the Yale University School of Medicine (New Haven, CT, USA). Dr. Huszar discovered that a sperm cell that binds to hyaluronan is mature and has the capability to bind to and fertilize an egg. Sperm that does not bind is unable to fertilize and is likely to have other defects, including chromosomal abnormalities and reduced DNA integrity. The fast, simple test of sperm function will aid the diagnosis of male infertility and help determine the best course of treatment if assisted reproductive techniques are indicated.

The test, called the HBA Sperm-Hyaluronan Binding Assay, is being produced by Biocoat, Inc. (Fort Washington, PA, USA) but is being marketed and distributed by Mid-Atlantic Diagnostics, Inc. (Marlton, NJ, USA). Mid-Atlantic Diagnostics was formed in 1989 to provide products and services for the infertility market. The company has become a primary provider of new equipment and instrumentation for embryologists and reproductive endocrinologists worldwide.
