Microscopy System Aids Analysis of Breast Cancer Test

A microscopy system is designed for use with a test (HercepTest) for assessing breast cancer patients for whom trastuzumab (Herceptin) therapy is being considered. Called Ariol HerSight, the system has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administrastion (FDA).

Special testing is required to identify those women who are HER2-positive and thus candidates for treatment with Herceptin. The Ariol Hersight application helps pathologists determine whether the HER2 protein is over-expressed in breast cancer tissues that are being evaluated in routine laboratory settings. Herceptin is a targeted therapeutic treatment indicated for women with metastatic breast cancer whose tumors overexpress the HER2 protein. The Ariol Hersight system was developed by Applied Imaging Corp., (Santa Clara, CA, USA), a supplier of automated imaging systems for the analysis of chromosomes in cancer and prenatal disorders.
