In-Cell Test for Papillomavirus

A fast test developed for papillomavirus (HPV) detects transforming genes, while current tests only detect the presence or absence of HPV but not the activity of transforming genes.

HPV has been implicated in the development of cervical cancer due to transforming genes, which are believed responsible for transforming normal cells into abnormal and potentially cancerous cells. The new test is compatible with conventional Pap tests, liquid-based cytology specimens, and a new test under development that uses biomolecular marker probes. Based on technology licensed from Invirion (Frankfort, MI, USA), the test is the product of Ampersand Medical Corp. (Chicago, IL, USA) and is a companion product to Ampersand's InPath System.

The InPath System, based on biomolecular markers and fluorescence, represents a revolutionary approach to cervical cancer screening, says Ampersand. The system includes the use of multiple protein-based probes and stains used in combinations that are able to detect low-grade as well as high-grade dysplasia and cancer. InPath together with the new HPV test will offer a complete two-in-one, point-of-care screening system for cervical cancer.

"The combination of this HPV test and our InPath System is designed to keep cells intact, unlike other HPV screening options,” notes Peter Gombrich, chairman and CEO of Ampersand Medical.
