Safer Cultivation with New Broth Medium

A highly nutritious liquid medium for the cultivation of streptococci, pneumococci, meningococci, and other fastidious organisms is free from bovine brain material.

The new medium, from Oxoid (Basingstoke, UK), is designed to give performance characteristics equivalent to the company's Brain Heart Infusion Broth. Although the bovine brain used in the Brain Heart Infusion is not SRM (specified risk material), its exclusion in Heart Infusion Broth may ease potential regulatory issues for the user in certain applications.

The Heart Infusion Broth can also be supplemented with yeast extract, haemin, and menadione to improve the growth of Bacteroides spp. Simple additions to this medium will also make it suitable for blood culture for the cultivation of yeasts and molds.

In a related development, Oxoid has also introduced new pouches with an integral seal to its range of compact atmosphere generation systems (AGS). The range provides a selection of simple and convenient kits for the rapid and safe generation of optimal environments in a convenient pouch format. Offering a gas-tight seal, the pouches are designed for the incubation of a small number of plates. Since they are transparent, they allow growth to be observed at any time without disturbing the atmosphere within the pouch and are ideal for slower-growing colonies.
