Homocysteine Assay Utilizes General Chemistry Analyzers

A new enzymatic assay that utilizes general chemistry analyzers allows doctors to affordably measure homocysteine in a rapid, accurate manner in their own laboratory.

The new homocysteine test has been added to the testing menu for the Poly-Chem(R) analyzer of Polymedco (Cortlandt Manor, NY, USA). Homocysteine is widely regarded as a predictor for cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that elevated plasma homocysteine levels present an independent risk factor for vascular disease similar to that of smoking or elevated cholesterol.

Homocysteine increases the oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad” cholesterol, rendering it more damaging to blood vessels. Increased homocysteine levels may also promote the formation of blood clots in the deep veins of the legs, called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). More recent studies link elevated homocysteine levels with a higher risk of congestive heart failure.

Historically, methods for testing homocysteine were either too technically challenging or cost prohibitive for many physicians to perform testing in their own laboratory. Armed with these results, physicians will be able to direct their patients' therapy to reduce homocysteine levels as necessary.
