New System for Collecting Blood from Donors

A new automated blood collection system produces high red cell quality and donor satisfaction while collecting two units of blood from a single donor.

The data were presented at the International Society of Blood Transfusion in Edinburgh (Scotland) in July 2004 by the Welsh Blood Service (Pontyclun, UK). The service evaluated the Alyx system of Baxter International (Deerfield, IL, USA).

The Alyx system is a mobile, automated blood collection system that allows eligible donors to give two units of red blood cells instead of one pint of whole blood. It collects only the desired blood component, returning all other blood components and replacement fluid back to the donor. The system recently received the CE Mark.

"With more stringent donor eligibility requirements in the United Kingdom decreasing the eligible donor pool, it is important that we maximize our collection of red blood cells, the blood component in greatest demand,” said Dr. Keith M.O. Wilson, senior lecturer in hematology, University of Wales College of Medicine. "In addition, our staff reported the system was easy to use and all donors reported they would donate again on the Alyx system.”
